I have been sewing since I was 12 years old. I entered contests at the Walker County fairgrounds and won first place and then Grand Champion. I am so grateful to my home economics teachers, Mrs. Schroeder in eighth grade and Carol Smith in high school for their encouragement and patience. Over 30 years ago, I started altering wedding gowns for friends. I shared a space downtown on University Dr. with my mother. She would meet brides to discuss wedding cakes and catering. She had many requests for someone to “fix” their wedding gowns. I agreed that I would try. I started by buying gowns at garage sales to "practice.”. Then friends who were getting married asked me to alter their gowns. The excitement was contagious when brides giggled at the look they got in their custom-fit gown. I received so many calls and stayed very busy. The next step was obvious.
You need to open a bridal salon with gowns. This led me to open my bridal salon, Bridal Gallery, in 1995. Currently, I have a calling to go back to my roots to revive the dying art of sewing. I am working out of my home by appointment only when I get home from my 8–5 job at DPS. I still love the excitement of the perfect fit. My future plans are to turn my garage into a fitting studio. In the meantime, I am staying busy but can always take in more business. Working with local friends in the wedding business is something I have missed. I am looking forward to helping build the bridal business once again in the Huntsville area.
